Times Like These

This week has been a tragic one with five school shootings happening around the country. I just wanted to share a little bit about how they have impacted me. Over time, school shootings have been occurring more often and the effect of these tragedies will reach faculty and students in other schools. We all care very much about the well-being of every individual within our schools and wish no harm to come to them as they perform their duties or seek to learn about the world around them. It bothers me a lot to see that some believe that violence is the answer to all their problems. How does one tragedy get cured by inflicting another tragedy on other people? What can we do as teachers to prevent something like this from happening? One of my favorite bands in the whole universe is the Foo Fighters and they have some lyrics to a song called “Times Like These” that offer up some advice on what we can do to take a step in the right direction.

It’s times like these you learn to live again

It’s times like these you give and give again

It’s times like these you learn to love again

It’s times like these time and time again

My heart goes out to all of the families who lost a loved one in these horrible acts of violence. May they rest in peace.
