Is It Good to be Completely Honest All the Time?

I was looking through the education news in Yahoo and I came across an article where Democratic presidential candidate Barrack Obama was blunt with high school students claiming he drank in high school and experimented with drugs.  For one, this kind of honesty is good coming from him in the position that he find himself in, but does it have the potential to backfire on him? As teachers, can we be so blunt with parents and students to show we have nothing to hide?  What if we did same as Senator Obama.  Will we be scrutinized for our past actions or praised for our honesty?  I think that he is doing himself a great service of being so honest with everyone showing the nation that he is putting all his cards on the table and not hiding any skeletons in a closet.
