Is a Policy for Everything Helpful?

I was reading a blog from the OLDaily and Stephen brings up an interesting point.  Why do we need a policy for what to do when you come into contact with a student online? I think it is common sense on how you should behave and mantain a sense of professionalism.  The fear that school districts try to put into educators about using facebook and myspace is only a way to try and protect themselves.  Communicating with students via these social networking services seems like a better idea.  The kids know the interface and do not have to deal with the awkwardness of something new and impersonal.  There are applications on facebook that are inappropriate for a teacher’s profile and most teachers can determine what can be included in their own profile.  We teach freedom to our students today, but we are not free to make our own decision on how to conduct ourselves online.  It’s like Stephen says at the end of this blog, the beauty of living in a free society is in how much of our behavior goes unregulated.
