What is distance?

The factors lead to one’s understanding of the word distance depends on the connection between people. Sure we can say that since I live in Kentucky and another grad student at the University of Alaska that we are distant, but the definition is not limited to just that perspective. The people we see at work we may speak to on a daily basis to do our job efficiently, but outside of work we may not speak to them at all. The only thing we have in common is work and nothing else and therefore a void grows between us. In creating distance education environments, we need to keep in mind that people will open up more if they feel welcomed and the level of awkwardness is low, which could be either nervousness or whether the environment is user friendly. Just because the playing field has gone global doesn’t mean we have to throw out the concepts that make a classroom efficient and effective.
